Official flag of Republic of Ireland (Éire)
The Irish tricolour was first introduced in 1848 as an emblem
of the Young Ireland movement - the green representing the
older Gaelic and Anglo-Norman population, the orange the Protestant
planter stock, and the white signifying hopes for a lasting
peace between the two. However, it was not until the Easter
Rising of 1916, when it was hoisted above the General Post
Office in Dublin, that the tricolour came to be regarded as
the national flag.
